i'm attending a literary festival here in toronto, and my sister flew up from virginia to see me and to bring a small hoard of pens i'd been storing at her place.

and what a trove it is. i'd bought most of these in lots for resale, but i'm going to have a hard time letting go of many. except for the pelikan 140 parts pen, all seem to be fully restorable. the prize pens are the bexley giant, the astoria goliath, the burgundy duofold (sold as an international but seems to be a centennial--have to verify), the two big reds, the sheaffer balance II, the CS 770, and the woodgrain gold medal. one great find was one of the big reds (which i will now have to hold on to)--with a lovely flexible nib.

one pen i'd been waiting for months to get my hands on is finally with me, and what a beauty it is:

that's an astoria goliath, custom-made by max schrage in this particular configuration. that's an 18K B-stub nib, and supposedly it's a no. 8, but guess what--here it is next to a bexley giant with a no. 12 nib, and it just dwarfs the bexley. (edit: i've since been told that the bexley nib could be just a no. 6.)

that's not just the camera angle; the nib is huge (and sweetly smooth). i'll take more pictures of it beside my agatha, whose nib also looks puny next to the aptly named goliath. many thanks again, max!

thanks, guys. i have to clarify that while most of these pens are ebay finds, the astoria was ordered by me from max. he usually employs a #6 nib for this black and mottled pearl configuration, but i had him put a #8 in mine, for which i think he had to use a bigger cap.

i had another pen come in yesterday (one you'll surely recognize) and it made a fine pair with the goliath:
