I pulled my autographs out for a shot. I didn't realize I had so many but I think most are ordinary.

"Ordinary" perhaps, but the first time I've seen a Autograph Triumph (clipless) Tuckaway. Wow!

Greg,

Is the Tuckaway pencil w/ the white dot from the Touchdown series? I didn't realize the tips were shorter and smaller. Is the pen to it's left that's longer than the other Tuckaways a Stratowriter BP?

Great collection Greg. Some are duplicates are are there subtle differences one to the next, amongst the 1940's pens?

The late 1940's Autograph full size pens I still need to review. I have several (mostly as lever fillers) spanning (presumably- can be hard to tell in black) the celluloid plunger-era, injection-plastic plunger-era and (injection plastic) TD era. There are some size variations, and I still need to figure out which sizes were offered when.

david

Hi Matt,
Never noticed that before. However, I've also never seen an Autograph Tuckaway with the TD filler.
I may have picked this pencil up by itself, so I don't know what kind of pen it started life with.

The pen to its left isn't actually much longer- it it an artifact of the not-quite-square geometry of my photo.

Yes, there are a few duplicates among the Triumph nibbed pens (3 lever-fillers and 2 vac-fillers.) All appear to be identical to at least casual examination.

The white dot on the pencil got my attention first. It wasn't added until after celluloid production ceased, correct? The tip is correct, note the barrel profile is different than the other Tuckaway pencils, ending in the same diameter as a full length pencil. I need to find a picture of a pencil w/ a Touchdown Tuckaway.

added later: Trivia I suppose, but the change in the pencil tip must have occured soon after the end of celluloid:

This next one is a fresh acquisition August 2011, a major Happy David pen no doubt. It hits on all levels.

Sheaffer oversized Balance in relatively uncommon gray-red, harder pen still to find clean. The solid gold trim Autograph variant is off-catalogue. I've seen total of three such pens in 13 years collecting. Shot one from a Texas collection and believe Sarj has one. No doubt others lurk.

Really, if one had to have a single Sheaffer Balance in pocket or in collection, this could suffice. It does not get much better.

That colour celluloid is my favourite!

I thought all Autographs had solid gold trim as per their 14K and some 18K hallmarks...what's the catch?

Looking for a Sheaffer OS Balance with a Stub nib and other OS Oddities.

Hi Pedro,

Autograph line pens generally (and Autograph models per se always) have gold clip and cap-band. Can basically forget the 18k which is an anomaly ;) I've seen one and David Nishimura iirc has seen one other all told. There are some pens in the family (formally, the model name is not Autograph) with gold band but filled clip.

So yes, solid gold trim is "catalogue" for Autograph, but Autograph was not catalogued in this color.

Cool find David !
You are right, I do have a similar pen in my collection. My pen is slightly earlier with the "short humped" clip with round ball end which was phased out in late1934.
This is a great thread. I firmly believe that there must be Autograph versions of all the Balance colours out there somewhere.

I haven't seen this one pictured in this thread. It is the only striated OS that I have seen.
Unless of course, anyone know's different.

Hi Sarj,

I know the lineage/provenance for this one. I missed it on a table at Chicago Thursday at $200. It had just sold to one of the Jons, who sold it to Al Mayman around $425 then iirc to you. At least I believe this one is that one ;)

I'd been slightly held up that Thursday morning for the pre-show and arrived as the pen was changing hands the first time. Two minutes earlier... sigh.

Only brown stripe Autograph I've seen. Again, it seems after the 1930 catalogue, which showed Autograph in Black, mottled Marine Green and Black/Pearl, the pens of this sort were catalogued only in black, though obviously we have seen other colors. I have some Ebonized Pearl pens, have seen your brown, have a few gray/red (only one OS of course). And... so forth.

This one has been resting in the "needs to be restored" pile for a couple years, along with too many others. Spotted it couple weeks ago, and during one of our evening restoration sessions, Ron Zorn got it up and running.

Clean early-ish OS Balance Auotograph. Ball clip. No personalization. A real gem. This one might even stay in my personal collection

Some Sheaffer Marine Green Autograph Eye Candy:

Picked up this rather sweet Sheaffer Marine Green (mottled) Stubby (short, standard girth) Balance last week on ebay. There still are pens out there to find ;)

Looks good with some of its sibs, including a very scarce Autograph golf pencil. At some point I must find a short slender (ladies') size in this color and trim.
