Nothing wrong with optimism, I s'pose.

Anyway, here is the Wiki on Melvin Purvis.

One of these months the emoticon package will be upgraded.

Hugh,

This ebay offering is indeed one of those quizzical ones.

An equally interesting tidbit from your posting is the implicit admission that you are a combo collector. Why else would you have come across this auction? Understand that this isn't an attack, just a shout out from another similarly afflicted (infected?) soul. There I said it, I am a combo collector (in the back ground, Helen Reddy sings "hear me roar...").

You know that facial expression people give when you tell them you collect fountain pens? Fountain pen collectors give me the same look when I tell them I collect combos. Go figure.

Hey John (and, yeah, i have your silver pearl cap),

While I don't have a focus on Combos, I do grab 'em when they pertain to foci I do have. Or if happen to catch my fancy. Given that combos largely were a fad of lower-tier manufacturers, there are heck of a bunch- as you know- of affordable 1930's Combos out there, some rather pretty.

I'll probably be accused of "Show n' Brag"'-ing now, but hey that's ok. Here are some of my Sheaffer Combos.

Would be happy to see other Combos.

Sheaffer definitely was the most prolific combo maker of the big four. I still haven't acquired a nice Sheaffer jade yet although I've come up with a few nice jades from other brands. I'll toss up a few photos this weekend.

BTW, what's wrong with a little "show 'n brag"?

Cool stuff there, John. I've never seen one like the far left one in the second picture. Hard rubber with the pencil in the cap?
intriguing.

Yep, the brand name is Selmar. It originally sported a "Z" clip that had rotted away.

Hi John,

In my case the word is minor...very minor with a total of 3. You certainly have some attractive ones there, I'll probably add a few as time goes by. Here's one combo I recently bought.

Before making fun of that eBay listing, keep in mind that while the combo may be nothing more than a low-quality cheapie to us, it may have considerable value to a different group of collectors as an early FBI-related piece.  Crossover collectibles of this sort can often surprise -- something I learned early on when attending a Skinner's auction with a relatively large number of oversize advertising display pens.  I thought I'd have a good chance of buying these nonfunctional models, which at pen shows were esoteric items that few were willing to pay much for.  As it turned out, I didn't get a one: collectors of period advertising bought them all, paying well above what pen collectors would have thought was "the market".

After reading about Melvin Purvis it did cross my mind there might be other interests at play here. Ignorance has it's benefits and pitfalls!!
