I am looking for recommendations as to what one would use to solvent weld casein.

I know people often recommend super glue, but I am looking to avoid it.

Thanks for any advice.

There is no solvent weld for casein. I understand a two part epoxy resin is the most suitable adhesive, a slow setting type allows for precise positioning. A circular clamp (similar to those used by dentists) will hold a split or crack together while the glue sets, but a thin brass collar is often fitted permanently inside the barrel to act as a splint to provide a greater area for adhesion and hence a much stronger repair.

Henry Simpole is probably the restorer with most experience on casein pens. My collection is almost entirely casein, and he has done many successful repairs for me over the years.

We are currently chasing down a possible solvent. Reportedly a strong alkali solvent has successfully dissolved old casein glues, and may well be successful in repairing casein pens. Our local chemical supply company is looking for a source, and assuming they can get it in reasonable quantities (like, less than 45 gallons), we'll try it out.

What solvent would you like.  I have a large lab at a major US university and I'm a registered shipping agent for hazardous materials as a function of my job.  Or I could just tell you where to purchase what you need.

Drop me a line if you have trouble finding what you need.
