J.J. LAX PENS NIB R & D SALE

27 September 2015 - 09:39 PM

This is the fourth sale I am posting today, and out of all of them, I thank you for looking at this one. Over the past year, I have shall we say, studied the art of nib modification. What follows are pens with nibs I have studied on. Some of them have some aesthetic issues, but all should write appropriately for the particular grind I gave them. I give more information with each pen. If you do purchase one, know that you are helping me begin what I hope will be a lifelong service (I am 32) that I can offer to our community.

Prices include shipping CONUS first class with tracking number. International orders ship or other methods will be additional. I entertain all reasonable offers and love package deals. Please contact me with any questions. Let’s get to it:

From left to right:

1) Silver Baoer, medium cursive italic. The metal on these Chinese nibs is very soft, and as I was experimenting with shaping the tines, they got a little marred. Should not affect the use of the pen. $25.

2) Black Baoer, medium cursive italic. The nib came out looking better, but the quality of the metal was still an issue. The tip of the tines were taken down a hair too much, but this should not be noticeable unless you look close at it. $25.

3) Silver Jinhao. I don’t remember the model number. Medium cursive italic. During the cuts, the right tine bent due to the quality of the metal. I fixed it, the pen writes, but the price reflects any risk of future problems. $20.

I had to re-photograph this group of pens so they are out of order.

4) Think Iceland, medium stub. This is the blue, black and white pen shown in the two photos above. This has a stub thatI was experimenting with, in that the shape is actually achieved by making the cuts for a cursive italic upside down. The effect is a stub in that the nib has line variation but as much as a true cursive italic, and the nibs writes very smooth. I believe other nib people have been making similar experiments. $75.

5) Think Violino Cremona Pen, medium stub. This is the green woodgrain pen with yellow finials. I love this pen, but its got some issues. It is a nice oversized pen, an interesting acrylic pattern, with what looks to be a custom stamped Bock nib. The rub is that after a fill the pen stops writing. I cannot explain this phenomenon, other than to conclude the feed itself has some defect that cannot be seen. So, what are left with? A nice barrel, section and cap that can accommodate a standard nib assembly, and a working No. 6 nib ground to a stub. $60.

6) Jinhao, unknown model. I got this pen years ago, has a cursive italic that was done all by hand. $25.

7) Appleman Pen, broad nib, between a stub and an italic. This is the beige, brown and translucent flake acrylic oversize pen. This is an experimental pen done by Appleman Chris Hughes. In turn, I used it to experiment on the nib. It a large Schmidt broad that I modified early on, then worked on it further as I started to understand better what I am doing. $95.

8) Yellow Modern Mabie Todd. This is the yellow and silver pen, made under the name Mabie Todd (I believe by the Fountain Pen Hospital). Has a medium stub. SOLD

9) and 10) Fountain Pen Revolution Ebonite Triveni. These are the green and brown ripple pens. Both have broad cursive italic nibs. They slightly rough looking as I was still working on how to finish the CI nibs at the time. The brown has the original FPR nib, the green a Knox nib. The Knox nib is not seating properly, so I will include a spare FPR medium or fine nib. Or I can grind you a CI on a medium or fine FPR nib. Since I don’t have extensive experience with these pens, they are sold as is at a fair price. $40 each.

AFFORDABLE VINTAGE FLEX AND MODERN ATTEMPTS

27 September 2015 - 09:21 PM

Yes, thats right, affordable vintage flex. I restored some, other came to me restored, and I will give the pertinent info below. Prices include shipping CONUS first class with tracking number. International orders ship or other methods will be additional. I entertain all reasonable offers and love package deals. Please contact me with any questions.

21581191805_df74f78095_c.jpg

From left to right:

1) No Name BHR Eyedropper. Waxed and polished by me, has a vintage accommodator clip. I cleaned everything, set the nib. The nib is a No. 3 Warranted 14K nib. Good pen to flex 14K around the house. SOLD

2) No Name Orange Ring Top. Aesthetically has some issues such as staining at the barrel threads and abrasions around the cap band which I tried to buff out. On the other hand, its a beautiful orange celluloid with a new sac ready to write. I cleaned the nib and feed, buffed the celluloid, did what I could to polish the hardware and installed a new sac. The nib is by no means perfect, and here is the deal: the tipping was low when I got the pen in a lot, but I’ve smoothed it reasonably well and I made it somewhat cursive or stubbish. In addition to the flex, you will get a bit of extra line variation. $35.

3) Merlin 33. Green celluloid, button filler, 14K nib. I have read that these were made in England, but that they were also made in Germany or the Netherlands. In any event, this is a nice little pen, smalled than an Esterbrook. The nib is a semi-flex, and it feels solidly made. I bought this from someone selling a bunch of these that were both marked and unmarked with the Merlin logo. This one was one of the best and had no hallmark. I have not used or restored this pen. $60

4)Merlin Merlina. Smaller than the the 33, a nice blue celluloid. I purchased this from Richard Binder when he had a New Old Stock supply, I wrote with it for half a fill. Its been flushed and cleaned. Again the nib is not full flex, but is solidly constructed. $55.

Now we turn to the modern attempts I am selling:

21393306058_192294d342_c.jpg

A DISCLAIMER: As I say, these are modern attempts to recreate the majesty of the flex nib. The first thing to realize, is that though these nibs have tines that will flex out, they are not made like the vintage nibs of old. Particularly with the titanium nibs, too much flexing can spring the nib. So though I am including them in the same sale as the affordable vintage flex, and you will get line variation from these nibs, greater care must be taken in their use.

5) Stipula Model T Malachite, large titanium nib, green swirl acrilyc or resin. I believe this edition is getting harder to find. Can be used as either an eyedropper or cartridge converter. This one comes with no eyedropper or converter. Its a nice size pen, reminiscent of the Shearer Balance. I like this pen but do not think I will get much use out of it. $160, or $165 with a converter.

6) Stipula, not sure of the model, it was sold as a special at Tuesday Morning 7 or 8 years ago. This has a lovely blue flake acrylic, and a smaller titanium nib than the Model T. I have seen similar pens sold with different model names. $110.

7) Guider Brown Ebonite Set. This is an Indian Ebonite FP and Ballpoint/Rollerball set in which I swapped the nib in the fountain pen from the stock steel nib to a Fountain Pen Revolution flex nib. I use the same nib in another of my Indian pens and I have a lot of fun with it. This fountain only fills with an eyedropper. $30 for the set.

MIXED MODERN - RECIFE, PILOT, OMAS, TACCIA, GAMA, DIP PENS

27 September 2015 - 09:05 PM

Prices include shipping CONUS first class with tracking number. International orders ship or other methods will be additional. I entertain all reasonable offers and love package deals. Please contact me with any questions.

1) Taccia Andante Piston Filler. Somewhat hard to find these days, not sure when Taccia was making these, but an interesting pen. Its a piston filler, with blue-yellow acrylic thats similar to the Tibaldi celluloid. Fine steel nib. Cool and unusual. $80.

2) Recife. Not sure of the model, but a big pen in a burgundy/reddish swirl. Bought it used, cleaned it, used it for maybe one converter fill, but could not make it a mainstay in the rotation because the nib is a fine. Has a nick at the base of the barrel. SOLD

21393305328_14452d6e45_c.jpg

3) and 4) Gama Airborne. These are Indian ebonite eyedroppers made by the company Gama to mimic the Eversharp Skyline. I love Indian eyedroppers, but these are too slender for me. The one source I know of for these pens has sold out for a long time. Both SOLD

5) Pilot Vortex. Kind of a futuristic little pen, medium Japanese steel nib, I guess at one time this would have been called a school pen. $20.

21556305828_4e9914be68_c.jpg

The pens in the above photo are list left to right, or smallest to biggest. I bought these from someone on FPN, whose name and website I no longer remember. These are large nib holders, hand-turned, out of exotic woods. Since I don’t recall the woods, I have given them descriptors with the prices as follows:

6) Dark and Red $30
7) Light With a Little Dark $30
8) Black with inlay $35
Or all three for SOLD

21394251339_fbc67a4d53_c.jpg

9) Cross Verve Platinum. I really love this pen, and am hesitant sell but alas I have not used it in a few years. Has a large integrated nib, I believe medium to broad width, nice weight, and metal body with a matte texture. It has some water droplet marks that I have been unable to polish off but are not that noticeable. I constantly consider keeping this pen. Cross Converter is included. $125

10) Omas Ogiva Black Ballpoint. New old stock and unused, comes with box and leather sleeve. $125

11) Pilot Custom 91 Yama Budo Medium Nib. Pilot came out with several Custom 91 pens to match the Iroshizuku colors. This is the pinkish pen shown above. New, unused, with box and all enclosures, 14K nib. $80.

12) Pilot Custom 91 Yama Guri Fine Nib. Same as above, but this is the brown pen and has a fine nib. New, unused, with box and all enclosures, 14K nib. $80.

VINTAGE USERS, SHEAFFER, PARKER AND ROTRING (some rare)

27 September 2015 - 08:57 PM

Up for sale are a number of user vintage pens (except for one) restored by me.  I like all these pens but they won’t see much use by me due the size of the pen or the nib width.  Prices include shipping CONUS first class with tracking number. International orders ship or other methods will be additional. I entertain all reasonable offers and love package deals. Please contact me with any questions.

From Left to Right:

1) Sheaffer Junior with abalone celluloid, small pen, 14K fine nib, new sac, body has some nicks and microscratches, though I polished the pen on a bench lathe.  The clip and and cap ring have some plating loss, and to preserve whats left on the cap ring I did not polish the metal.  The lever is also slightly off. Despite the cosmetic issues the celluloid is gorgeous and it makes a great vintage pen to toss in a bag or carry with a journal or notepad.  $35.

2) Sheaffer Lifetime Balance. Confession: I don’t know the official balance size terminology, but this one is more full length but slim.  Not sure what the parlance is.  Restored. The cap lip has a chip and crack, but its all good above the cap ring.  Micro scratches and hardware is in good shape. The nib is the star here, a fine 14K Lifetime nib (message me for the legal history of the lifetime guarantee), with nice tipping considering its age. Would be more if the cap wasn’t damaged.  $50.

3) Eversharp Skyline, black, I believe its the standard size, microscratches but has been machine buffed.  Nice EF 14K nib. Restored, and has a breather tube installed (sometimes restorers forget that).  $50.

4) Parker 51 Vac, EF nib, nice overall condition, gold cap, blue diamond is there, new diaphragm installed by me.  I would keep this pen if it did not have the EF nib, which is just too fine for me.  It writes almost a hairline, for those that like such things.  $90.

5) Waterman Man 200, black, fine 18K nib.  I cleaned and reset the nib and feed.  I like the pen but the nib is a fine, and I acquired a Man 100 with a medium nib around the same time.  The nib on this is springy, but it is by no means flexible.  You will get some play with it, but you should not attempt to flex it.  Overall a great pen from the not too distant past.  $150.

20958386464_918fd6c9f8_c.jpg

From Left to Right:

6) This pen is not really vintage, and frankly not all black.  Its a Laban Dunhill knock off, with a steel nib, alloy body and plastic parts.  I included it here as it fits with the black pen theme. $25.

7) Sheaffer Touchdown, dolphin style nib assembly, nice smooth fine nib, one tine looks to the eye a little off, but it does not affect writing and the nib is pretty smooth.  Restored, in good shape, will make a nice daily writer.  $35.

8) Rotring Lissabon. When I acquired this pen, it was the most I had ever spent on a fountain pen and I bought a second one (see below) that went unused.  This has a large steel fine German nib (it should be the real deal IPG nib but no one knows for sure).  Its lacquered brass, with some heft, used for a period of time by me, and has a small mark on the cap.  These are hard to find now a days (all I saw was one on Ebay for $250). Cartridge/converter.  $60.

21744160715_40e02e8481_c.jpg

From Left to Right:

9) This is an unused, New Old Stock Rotring Lissabon, with a medium instead of fine nib.  Comes in a small box. $100

10) and 11) These are two Rotring Newtons.  Although based on the Rotring 600, there is no real connection other than faceted barrel, and in fact, this model was transformed by Sanford Newell into the Parker Facet pen when Sanford took over Parker and phased out all Rotring fountain pen models.  These pens take cartridges or converters, and you remove the section by unscrewing the nob at the end of the barrel. This releases the section and you can access the ink storage.  These were pens I also acquired early on, and one saw use and one saw no use at all.  The fine, the one I used, is in excellent shape save for some surface deterioration to the clip.  The medium is New Old Stock, unused by me, in excellent shape.  Both come in the original box.  Fine is $45, Medium is $75.

12) Rotring Riva.  This is a rollerball.  It looks like the Nautilus, and for those familiar with Rotring this was probably made in the period when they made science fiction style pens (like the Rotring Core).  Its a cool pen, somewhat rare, I purchased it from a German eBay seller.  $20.

15414239694_808bdf5df9_c.jpg

(Parker 51 and Sheaffer Dolphin are out of focus in the background)

13) Sheaffer Lifetime Flat Top Pocket Size Jade Green, fine 14k Lifetime nib, decent color, restored, has a clip as opposed to ring top, made for vest pockets?  I love these pens but I have one or two already and this has a fine nib. $50.

10 May 2015 - 05:47 PM

Looking for Parker 45 nibs, preferably broads, stubs and obliques.
