Hi!

I see my name bantered around on this thread.

Being rather a novice on vintage pens. etc. What's the deal?

I don't have any Parker 51 demonstrators, and if I did, I would put it up for sale, he he!

Greg,

I do apologize you any un-needed emails/attention from this thread, and i thought the Midnight blue P51 with DJ's and silver cap which was given to you by a watch friend was a P51 model with the clear section. When adding that comment i did not see our emails from months back, and that comments was a mistake on my part.

Hey, no worries; I just wanted to know what the deal was. I did indeed receive a Midnight Blue P51 with a silver cap from a watch dealer friend of mine that I use everyday; its part of my collection of "2" whole pens, ha ha ha! It does not have a clear section though, just the standard section.

Thanks!

Oh, my second pen given to me is a factory BB stub USA Parker Areometric 51 also in Midnight Blue and has a steel cap. My philosophy on collecting is that I only collect what is given to me as a gift; I would never buy a pen for myself!

Guess that explains why my shoes are worn out too, ha ha ha ha!

Just remember, every pen, everyone has, is for sale. It just depends on a mutually agreeable number. Don't ever let someone discourage you by saying something is not for sale, that just means you have to add another zero or two.

Do you really believe that? I've got pens that I would not sell for any amount no matter how many 0's you add to the end. On the other hand some of my pens I would gladly give away and I would probably have problems doing that.

If you believe that you have pens that are not for sale at any cost, then you are simply fooling yourself, or plain dumb. Memories, family heirlooms, and significant history can all be replaced, for a price. I know that if someone offered a ridiculous sum of money for my grandfathers 51 set, he would come back from the great beyond, and tell me to sell. In the end, you can't take it with you, and your kids will sell it anyway.

I , too, disagree with this statement. Simply taking your own opinion on a subject and assuming it correct and applying to everyone/situation is flawed . My late mother, a shrewd and financially successful person, would wholeheartedly agree with you though !!. Yet one pen I wouldn't part with is ( well was...) her Doric given to her for her 18th in 1936 nor would I sell my late fathers pen both for personal reasons , another is my PFM given to me by my wife for my 50th ( now selling that would be a very dumb move ..). Little doubt my kids will sell my "treasures" ( or some of them at least) but that's their choice.

It's okay to disagree with it.

Everyone has their own guidelines that govern their life, and hopefully no one took the "dumb" too much to heart. (not really my intent, but after reading thru, figured I better make sure I clarify)

Honestly tho, I would say that my most treasured pens, and I would offer that I have a pretty fair collection, If someone offered me silly money for them, they would be gone.

Even before, on a few key pens, I told people that I would never sell, i still had a price that would pry the pen from my hands.

It might be rich royalty money, with lost sof zero's, but the pens can go.

I would trade the collection for a nice sized Island in a pleasant climate, that is relatively close to the mainland, if anyone is thinking about it!

YOu guys are too serious, they're just pens...

Oh, and if you felt offended, get over it....

(just kidding, accept my apology, as I said above, not my intent)

Like I said some of my pens which I paid quite large sums for have no appeal. I have a solid 18ct Parker 51 which was a big disappointment and yet a Slimfold (worth less than £10 and took me hours to repair) would devastate me if I lost it because every time I write with it it glides over the paper with a double broad wet line and a stupid grin comes on my face. Pens that make me feel like this are few and far between. I probably have about half a dozen.

At the moment my pens are all I have. After a brain injury which totally incapacitated me (unable to walk, use PC, even wash myself etc.) my carer died suddenly. It was my husband of 45 years married. I had to try to get on with things and have made remarkable progress but I am still housebound. My pens have been my salvation. I look at on line auctions an buy job lots and then I spend my time trying to repair. I joined this board because I have made so many bad purchases. I can only see pictures and you know how deceiving they can be. I use my pens to write long letters to old friends. Their replies make me realise I am alive.

Just prior to my injury my husband and I bought a holiday home in Cyprus but he only got to go a few times. The villa is lying alone and unloved but I am unable to sell it cos I can't get out there to sort it out. I have tried by E mail but I just keep getting ripped off. What I am trying to say is I have financial security but no way to enjoy it. I need the expertise of this board to help me carry on with my hobby and who knows 1 day I might buy that pen that everyone wants and I hate and someone will get a bargain.
Rick how about a nice villa in Cyprus for your pen collection?
